Why Michael Weatherly Would not Be a Good Mark Harmon Replacement on ‘NCIS’

I’m sure “NCIS” fans are reading too much into the news that “Bull” is ending. Everyone is wondering if Michael Weatherly will return to “NCIS.” So, let me tell you why that’s a bad idea.

First and foremost, Tony’s story is now intertwined with Ziva and Tali’s. Tony’s family is in Paris, and it doesn’t feel right for him to return alone. He spent so much time connecting with his child that leaving his family for his old job doesn’t fit with who Tony is now. If Tony returns, he’ll have to bring the entire family, which defeats the purpose of their departure in the first place.

Second, he’d have to compete with Parker for the position of leader anyway. Parker is now firmly seated in the captain’s chair; for crying out loud, he referred to them as his team. That took him a long time; Tony waltzing back in and demanding the job doesn’t fit with what we know about either character.

There are a lot of factors at work that don’t add up to Tony returning and leading the team. It doesn’t fit his character, and it doesn’t fit with where “NCIS” is right now.

As the team’s permanent leader, my vote does not go to Tony. Sure, as a guest appearance, I’m all for it. It would be great to see Tony on “NCIS” again. I’d like to see how becoming a parent has influenced him. I just don’t see it happening any time soon.

On Returning to ‘NCIS,’ Michael Weatherly

In terms of Michael Weatherly’s feelings about returning to his former show, we already know that he adores “NCIS.” He frequently posts about the show and his experiences on it on social media. So, I predict it won’t take much to persuade him to return.

When DiNozzo left the show in 2016, Weatherly stated, “[DiNozzo] will live on in the hearts and minds of the viewers and is embedded in the show… “I’d be open to anything and everything, including things no one has even thought of yet.”

So, it’s clear that the door for Weatherly is still open; is it still open for “NCIS”? Would the executives even think about bringing him back? One thing is certain: I don’t believe Weatherly’s views on “NCIS” have changed since 2016. He frequently posts about the show, from watching reruns and missing his co-stars to waking up from a Tony-related dream.

I’m hoping that once “Bull” concludes, Weatherly or “NCIS” will address the rumors of Tony’s return. Either way, we’ll get a confirmation or the rumors will be put to rest for good.
