NCIS: Los Angeles aired a new episode on Sunday night, but Callen was not in it.
As the night progressed, the absence of star Chris O’Donnell on-screen raised a slew of questions from NCIS: Los Angeles fans.
On NCIS: Los Angeles, where is Callen? Chris O’Donnell is leaving NCIS: Los Angeles. Is G. Callen still a character on NCIS: Los Angeles?
So, let’s get into those questions because the answers all revolve around the same central point in the show’s writing.
Fans of NCIS: Los Angeles wonder, ‘Where is Callen?’
On the NCIS: LA winter premiere, Callen informed Sam that he had discovered another person (a woman) with a file on them in Hetty’s office. In the early moments of Season 13, Callen discovered a file on himself, as well as a number of other kids who had worked with Hetty.
At the very end of that episode, Callen encountered the woman outside of a restaurant and persuaded her to have dinner with him without revealing his NCIS agent status. Callen was clearly curious as to why she had a file with Hetty and what she was up to in her life right now.
Then, at the very beginning of the January 9 episode of NCIS: LA, Admiral Kilbride and Sam Hanna had a brief conversation that revealed a little more information about what was going on.
“Where is your partner, Agent Hanna?” Kilbride inquired of Sam.
“He had some personal business to attend to,” Sam explained.
“I know that because I gave him personal time,” Kilbride added.
“He may have mentioned reconnecting with his sister, but that’s really none of our business,” Sam remarked incredulously.
The topic then shifted to the mission at hand, in which Kensi had gone off the grid and some bodies had been discovered in Mexico. Kilbride was well aware of the drama of this NCIS team becoming stranded in Mexico during a previous mission, and he wanted them to concentrate. That meant there was no time to think about what Callen was up to.
Answers to G. Callen and Chris O’Donnell’s questions
There have been no rumors about Chris O’Donnell leaving the NCIS: LA cast, and he is set to appear in the show’s January 23 episode. We’ll probably learn more about Callen’s side mission, which is becoming a recurring theme in the show’s writing.
Callen has begun to do a lot of off-the-books missions himself, similar to how Hetty went on mysterious missions and then reappeared a few episodes later, all with the goal of learning more about his past or reconnecting with Anna Kolcheck.
NCIS: LA has received some bad news, as production on Season 13 episodes has been halted due to a positive C0V1D case among the cast. The current plan is to reassess in February, so that the team can hopefully get back to work on creating good episodes for the season’s tail end.
Fans who missed Chris O’Donnell’s performance as Callen in the January 9 episode (Season 13, Episode 8 titled Land of Wolves) can be assured that he will appear in many more episodes this winter and spring.
