The True Story Behind Tom Selleck Joining the Cast of ‘Blue Bloods’

Tom Selleck didn’t just choose to join Blue Bloods for the character or script alone. After his eight-season run on Magnum, P.I., Selleck needed assurance that his family life wouldn’t be impacted by his new TV role as the head of the Reagan family.

In a 2010 Collider interview, Selleck confessed that he was initially hesitant to join Blue Bloods because it was shot in New York City, far from his Ventura, California ranch and wife, Jillie Mack. However, knowing that Blue Bloods was an ensemble show made my selection easy.

“It was an ensemble that clearly was going to require talented actors,” Selleck told Collider. “Having done a lead, as I did in Magnum, being in every shot, I know it’s a tough road. Magnum was never canceled. I left it after eight years because I was tired from it, not tired of it. It’s always been a consideration, but this really just seemed to fit perfect. The script was terrific. The idea that it was going to shoot in New York caused a family consideration, but it was too good to pass up.”

The fact that he would only need to be in New York City part-time made the opportunity to join Blue Bloods too good to resist.

With Blue Bloods’ Large Cast, Tom Selleck Was Able To Mix Performing With His Desire To Spend Time With His Family.

Tom Selleck’s job in “Blue Bloods” has allowed him to manage acting with his family life, which he has always prioritized. The CBS drama, currently in its 14th season, does not require Selleck to appear in every scene, allowing him to spend time at his ranch and with his family. In April 2020, he told People that his connections and ranch “keep me sane.”

Selleck values privacy and cherishes his time with his wife Mack and his children, Hannah, 31, and Kevin, 54. This balance between work and personal life is essential for him, making him grateful for a show like “Blue Bloods” that accommodates his lifestyle. As long as the show continues to offer this balance, Selleck is happy to continue playing Frank.
