NCIS Updates on The Release of ‘Season 21’, Strike Delay, and What We Know

NCIS wrapped out a terrific season 20 with a surprise twist. Following the conclusion of a plotline concerning a prospective terr0rist assault, a character made a potentially disastrous decision.

Things appeared to be settling down once the offenders were identified, until a shocking twist involving Nick Torres left us with unanswered questions. What can we expect from season 21 of NCIS? Hopefully, we won’t have to wait long to find out.

Unfortunately, NCIS season 21 is not returning this autumn, as are many other shows that we expected to return. This is due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes, but there is some good news.

The writers’ strike is officially over, and we have some great news to share with show lovers!

NCIS season 21 is currently in the works.

According to Deadline, after the writers’ strike ended, writers’ rooms for shows like as NCIS, Grey’s Anatomy, Fire Country, and others reopened.

There have been no updates from the NCIS writers, however sources claim they are currently working on the scripts. If we receive images or other updates from the writers’ room, we’ll be sure to update this piece.

NCIS, the beloved police procedural drama, premiered in 2003 and has since captivated audiences worldwide with its gripping stories, fascinating characters, and easy-to-count-on entertainment. We’ve seen countless character d3aths and exits, as well as new story lines and difficulties, but the one constant has been how much we can rely on NCIS to be nothing short of entertaining.

Fans of the long-running drama did not have to wait long for a renewal announcement, since NCIS season 21 was formally announced in February 2023, months before season 20 ended. If you’re a lover of the TV series, you’ll be pleased to know that NCIS: Hawai’i was also renewed at the same time, with fans eagerly anticipating news on the spinoff’s third season.

Who will be back for the new season of NCIS?

As of today, it appears that the main cast will be returning. Given how his character’s arc ended on a cliffhanger, it’s unclear whether Wilmer Valderrama will return for good. However, we are convinced that the primary cast, which comprises of:

  1. Rocky Carroll as Director Leon Vance
  2. Sean Murray as Agent Timothy McGee
  3. Wilmer Valderrama as Agent Nick Torress
  4. Katrina Law as Agent Jessica Knight
  5. Diona Reasonover as Kasie Hines
  6. Gary Cole as Agent Alden Parker

Unfortunately, David McCallum, who played Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard, d1ed on September 25, 2023, of natural causes at the age of 90. NCIS stars Mark Harmon, Michael Weatherly, Pauley Perrette, and Wilder Valderrama all sent passionate condolences to the actor, with Valderrama calling it a “incredible honor” to share the screen with him.

Torres’ season 20 of NCIS ended on a major cliffhanger.

In the NCIS season 20 finale, Nick went undercover to learn more about the terr0r assault. He spotted a familiar face while there, but it was not one he wanted to recognize. The individual in question was evidently someone he knew from his mother’s past. In actuality, he met an inmate who claimed to be his mother’s boyfriend and was supposed to assist with legal bills.

Nick was at the man’s house at the end of the episode, clutching a revolver and told him he wanted him d3ad. Could this spell doom for Nick Torres and Wilmer Valderrama’s roles on the show?

While we know the series will most likely follow the same pattern of us witnessing the agents solve different cr1mes, we also know that there is always an overarching narrative at work. It’s unclear whether Torres will be involved. However, because this appears to be a personal arc, we may find out what is in store for the series as a whole closer to the airdate.

The impact of the writers’ and actors’ strike on NCIS

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) went on strike in early May after failing to reach an agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) on their contract. This meant that writers’ rooms were put on hold, and writers could not work on projects funded by the AMPTP.

Following that, the performers went on strike after the Screen performers Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) and the AMPTP were unable to reach an agreement on their contract.

So, how has this affected shows like NCIS?

So, while the strikes were ongoing, writers and actors represented by their various US unions were unable to legally collaborate with the AMPTP. So, while CBS had intended to create and begin filming NCIS season 21 in time for the fall season, that was not the case.

In September, it was revealed that the WGA had voted to end the strike, allowing writers’ rooms to resume normal operations! This featured NCIS season 21, which began production immediately after the end of the writers’ strike.

The actors’ union also signed a new agreement in November, thereby ending the SAG-AFTRA strike. This enables actors, including those from the NCIS cast, to resume promoting their series and return to set to film new episodes!

Season 21 Premiere of NCIS has yet to be announced.

NCIS season 21 does not yet have a premiere date, but we do know it will not be in 2023. For the first time in 20 years, there will be no new episodes of the beloved drama this fall. While we know the new season will premiere in 2024, we don’t know what month.

CBS hopes to begin production on NCIS’s next season in early December, now that the cast can begin filming. That is the first significant step toward getting the shows back on the air. Once filming can resume, the production process will begin, and it appears that shows will be able to return sometime in early 2024, possibly in February or March.

NCIS Season 21 will be the shortest season ever.

Because production on the next season was unable to begin during the summer and was delayed due to the strikes, NCIS will have the fewest episodes ever. The official episode count for Season 21 has yet to be confirmed by CBS, however most broadcast shows will only have 10-13 episodes this season. That’s half the usual number of episodes for CBS’s longest-running drama.

The majority of NCIS seasons have 20-24 episodes, with the shortest season being season 18, which was recorded during the C0V1D-19 pand3mic. Season 18 had only 16 episodes, making it the show’s shortest season since its fifth season, which had 19 episodes.
