NCIS fans have just been treated to a frenzy of excitement, with NCIS and NCIS: Hawai’i both enthralling audiences. Adding to the excitement, NCIS: Sydney aired last year and has been renewed for a second season. But that’s not all; two more spinoffs are on the way: NCIS: Origins delves at the origins of Leroy Jethro Gibbs, while an untitled series centers on Tony DiNozzo and Ziva David. How did these thoughts come about? CBS Studios President David Stapf provides insight on the subject.

NCIS: Origins was unveiled in January, with the show set to explore Gibbs’ early days joining the agency in 1991, shortly after a tragic loss. Stapf revealed that Mark and Sean Harmon, along with writers David North and Gina Monreal, pitched the concept. CBS jumped at the opportunity, recognizing the organic appeal of exploring Gibbs’ origins, especially given Mark Harmon’s departure from the main series. Harmon’s involvement extends beyond executive producing; he’ll narrate the series, with Austin Stowell portraying the young Gibbs.

The Tony and Ziva spinoff is breaking new territory by streaming exclusively on Paramount+. Despite Cote de Pablo and Michael Weatherly’s disappearance from NCIS, fans still like their characters. Stapf appreciates Tony and Ziva’s relationship’s ongoing popularity, calling it one of the most beloved on television. The spinoff will reconnect the characters as they navigate life on the run after Tony’s security firm is att4cked. The concept for the concert arose from chats between Weatherly and de Pablo, spurred by fan clamor for their reunion.

While premiere dates are yet to be announced, both spinoffs are set to start filming later this year, with NCIS: Origins slated for the 2024-2025 TV season.
