Gary Cole (Alden Parker), a newcomer to NCIS, has big shoes to fill on TV’s most-watched drama. Cole’s character has taken over as Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ replacement and is now leading the team, now that Mark Harmon’s Leroy Jethro Gibbs has left. But the veteran actor wants NCIS fans to know one thing: he’s not trying to be Gibbs.
Mark Harmon left ‘NCIS’ in the fourth episode of season 19.
Before the current season began, fans were aware that Harmon would likely be playing a smaller role on NCIS after having appeared in over 400 episodes. They didn’t expect Gibbs to say goodbye to his team and leave for good.
Gibbs and McGee (Sean Murray) were working a contract k1ll3r case that led them to Alaska in Season 19, Episode 4 “The Great Wide Open.” Gibbs had found some peace by the end of the case and chose to stay behind while McGee returned to Washington, D.C.
In episode 2, fans met Gary Cole’s Alden Parker.
During the first four episodes of the season, while Gibbs was saying his farewells, NCIS introduced viewers to the man who would take his place. In episode 2, “Nearly Departed,” viewers first met Cole’s Alden Parker, who was an FBI agent working undercover at the time.
Cole’s addition as a series regular on NCIS had been announced before the season began, so it was obvious that he would soon be leaving the FBI and joining NCIS. That is exactly what occurred.
After McGee declined the opportunity to lead the team, Gibbs recommended Parker, who accepted the position.
Gary Cole wants ‘NCIS’ fans to understand one thing.
The Emmy-nominated actor says he has a history of “dropping into shows,” but as a recurring character rather than a new series lead. Taking over for an actor and character who has been at the helm of the series for nearly two decades is a daunting task.
Cole, on the other hand, claims that it is part of his job to come in and “get comfortable, whatever it takes.” He is not attempting to imitate his predecessor.
“I’m not attempting to imitate [Gibbs].” “That distinction was made by the writers,” Cole told TV Line.
Parker and Gibbs are diametrically opposed characters.
Cole explained that his character is the new team leader at NCIS, but he is not the silent, stoic Gibbs. He also mentioned that Parker admires Gibbs, even if he doesn’t say it out loud.
“Parker isn’t particularly chatty, but he’s more verbal.” “He’s not as old school; he tries to get his hands on new tech gadgets and impress everyone,” Cole said. “He’s attempting to blend in with the rest of the team.” Although he is hesitant to admit it, he admires Gibbs’ willingness to break the rules. Parker flexes them. We’ll see if it reaches the breaking point.”
As the season progresses, ‘NCIS’ fans will learn more about Gary Cole’s Agent Parker.

NCIS is currently on hiatus for the holidays, but it will return on Monday, January 3, 2022, with an episode directed by Rocky Carroll titled “Pledge of Allegiance” (Director Vance). Cole says that as the season progresses, fans will learn more about his character’s backstory.
“There was a situation that did not go as planned, and something tragic occurred.” “It’s on purpose that he’s a bit of an enigma,” Cole explained.
Season 19 will also maintain the traditional case-of-the-week format that the series returned to in episode 5 after the overarching Gibbs storyline concluded.
“I think it’s time for us to sort of regroup and get back to telling good weekly mysteries with interesting characters, interesting stories, emotional hooks, and a satisfying ending,” Binder said.
