The second episode of NCIS Season 21, “The Stories We Leave Behind,” featured the crew mourning the death of Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard, played by David McCallum. However, co-showrunner Steven D. Binder frankly stated why Mark Harmon’s Gibbs did not appear in this homage episode.

Binder revealed that while they considered bringing back all original characters akin to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s approach after Tony Stark’s death, they opted for a more focused narrative. Michael Weatherly’s Anthony DiNozzo returned to provide levity, connecting with Jimmy Palmer, played by Brian Dietzen, who was at Ducky’s side.

Binder expressed a desire to save Gibbs’ comeback for a more “special” performance, citing financial and schedule difficulties. He told supporters that when Gibbs returns, it will be for a substantial narrative rather than a brief appearance.

The episode not only honored McCallum’s legacy but also hinted at future developments for Gibbs, keeping viewers eagerly anticipating his eventual return to the screen.
