NCIS’s success, which has earned it the title of the most popular TV show in the world, can surely be credited to its outstanding cast. However, before appearing on our screens as Special Agents and forensic specialists, these actors pursued various careers that were far from Hollywood glamour.

Mark Harmon, known as the iconic Leroy Jethro Gibbs, initially aimed for a sports career, following in his father’s footsteps as a soccer player. However, fate led him to acting after dabbling in various jobs, including carpentry and shoe sales. Despite never becoming a major movie star, Harmon’s dedication to TV roles like Dr. Robert Caldwell in “St. Elsewhere” solidified his place in the industry.

Before becoming an actor, Michael Weatherly, who played Anthony DiNozzo, wanted to play baseball and do stunt work. Weatherly, who was disinherited from his family riches, worked odd jobs like shoe sales and pizza delivery until securing breakout parts in “Dark Angel” and subsequently NCIS.

Pauley Perrette, known for her role as Abby Sciuto, had eclectic childhood dreams of working with animals, being in a rock band, or joining the FBI. After studying cr1minal justice, she ventured to New York, where bartending and odd jobs funded her pursuit of acting. A stint as lead singer in a grunge band paved her way to Hollywood.

David McCallum, the enigmatic Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard, was trained for a musical career by his musician parents before discovering his affinity for acting. McCallum rose to stardom as Illya Kuryakin in “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.,” and his popularity skyrocketed, however he never quite repeated that success until NCIS.

Sean Murray, who portrays Timothy McGee, navigated the acting world independently of his stepfather, Don Bellisario, despite early exposure to the industry. From extra roles in films to starring alongside Bette Midler in “Hocus Pocus,” Murray’s journey to NCIS was marked by perseverance.

Rocky Carroll, better known as Director Leon Vance, rose to prominence in theater before moving on to film. Carroll’s versatility, which included a Tony Award nomination and prominent television performances, prepared him for his unexpected role on NCIS.

Bryan Dietzen, the affable Dr. Jimmy Palmer, embarked on his acting journey with stage productions and small roles before landing a part in NCIS. Despite initial struggles in LA, Dietzen’s dedication and adaptability ultimately secured his place in the series.

Each actor’s road to NCIS exemplifies tenacity, enthusiasm, and the unexpected nature of show business. From childhood fantasies to global recognition, their various paths cross on the famous set of television’s most popular cr1me drama.
