Years after leaving the show, Michael Weatherly professes a desire to reprise his role as “Very Special Agent” Tony DiNozzo on NCIS.

Michael Weatherly, who played Tony DiNozzo, has expressed an interest in returning to NCIS. The third-longest-running scripted live-action show on broadcast television debuted in 2003 and remains one of the network’s most successful series.

Given its history, NCIS has seen its fair share of cast changes over the years, with some main characters electing to leave the show.

Long before Mark Harmon’s departure as Leroy Jethro Gibbs, his right-hand man DiNozzo departed the team at the conclusion of season 13 to focus on raising his recently discovered daughter. Weatherly’s leaving from NCIS season 13 is widely regarded as one of the series’ most significant.

It left a significant gap in the police procedural, and CBS knew better than to find someone to replace him, instead forging forward with tales that made only minor references to him.

Years after his departure, it appears that Weatherly is ready to return to what could be his most iconic role, as he implies in a brand new social media post.

In his tweet, he casually mentions that he could be up for “another round of DiNozzo at some point.” Read Weatherly’s entire post below:

Is DiNozzo Going to Join NCIS Again..?

Prior to Weatherly’s social media post, his former co-star Sean Murray uploaded an NCIS throwback photo of Timothy McGee and DiNozzo. This raises the possibility that CBS is planning a special reunion for the characters, which would be an appropriate surprise for NCIS season 20.

For reference, Weatherly left the police procedural to star in his own courtroom drama, Bull, which has now completed. Given all of these considerations, it’s conceivably the ideal time to bring back the “Very Special Agent.”

Weatherly repeating his role as DiNozzo would be a great treat for long-time NCIS fans, considering he has not made a guest appearance since his retirement at the end of season 13. However, if CBS truly wants to surprise fans, they may seek to acquire Harmon as well, so Gibbs and DiNozzo may finally reunite.

Perhaps Cote de Pablo, as Ziva David, can join in the fun, as she and DiNozzo resumed their romance after leaving the service.

Despite all of these hints, fans should hold off on raising their expectations for Weatherly’s arrival on NCIS season 20. Unless CBS makes a formal statement, it is dangerous to invest in the notion in case things don’t go as planned.

In any event, the good news is that Weatherly is anxious to return to the police procedural, making it easier to reinstate him on the show.
