NCIS 2021: Fans fear Leroy Gibbs’ exit after shock arrest in new promo

NCIS could be without its team leader Leroy Jethro Gibbs for some time as the special agent is arrested in a shocking new trailer for the next episode coming on Tuesday.

The 18th season of CBS’s popular crime drama NCIS has already been chock-full of massive twists and turns. In yet another surprising development, Leroy Gibbs (played by Mark Harmon) appears to be getting arrested in a recent promo for this week’s episode, ‘Watchdog’. The team leader hasn’t been confirmed to be leaving the series, but could he be trapped behind bars for the rest of the season?

Team leader Leroy Gibbs is taken in by inspector general Eugene Coyle (Hugo Armstrong) in a new promo for NCIS season 18.

In the tenth episode of the current instalment, ‘Watchdog’, the team are tasked to take down an undercover dogfighting ring.

An official synopsis reads: “NCIS uncovers a secret dogfighting ring, which leads to an unexpected move by one of the team members.”

It appears their investigation forces Gibbs to operate outside the law, forcing Coyle to step in.

However, fans won’t find out how serious his crime was until NCIS continues on Tuesday night.

While the inspector general could only be bringing in Gibbs for a brief dressing down, there’s a strong chance the agent could remain behind bars for some time.

The new trailer could indicate series lead Mark Harmon may be absent for a number of episodes of NCIS season 18.

This would leave the team’s current agents, McGee (Sean Murray), Torres (Wilmer Valderrama) and Bishop (Emily Wickersham) to fend for themselves.

Following the release of the new footage, fans voiced their concerns in the comments and on social media.

One fan theorised: “I’m wondering if Gibbs is going undercover for something.”

As the team’s latest case unfolds, Gibbs may decide that taking himself out of the spotlight could be the best course of action, and a staged arrest could be the perfect cover.

However, his actions on the series have been getting increasingly reckless following a series of traumatic events, suggesting he may have earned some serious jail time in the coming episode.

Earlier on, Gibbs parted ways with fellow agent and potential romantic partner Jack Sloane (Maria Bello), who opted to stay in Afghanistan.

He is also still feeling the loss of Emily Fornell (Juliette Angelo), the daughter of his old friend Tobias Fornell (Joe Spano).

Another fan speculated: “You have to think at this point Gibbs has lost almost everyone he’s loved and it’s like he’s not allowed to find peace in this world.

“This season has been nothing but a meat grinder for him and from where he stands, seeing the light at the end of the tunnel must seem impossible.”

After suffering even more tragic loss in the most recent season of NCIS, Gibbs could finally go off the deep end as he struggles to handle his mounting trauma.

Thankfully, Mark Harmon’s permanent exit from the show is unlikely, as demonstrated by Maria Bello’s departure being confirmed well in advance.

Even so, fans could expect to see a very different Gibbs going ahead, and it shouldn’t come as a surprise if he decides to retire as NCIS approaches its 20 year anniversary.
