Michelle Obama Pays Heartfelt Tribute as She Announces Her Mother’s Death

Michelle Obama has announced the death of her mother, Marian Robinson, at the age of 86.

In an Instagram post, the former First Lady referred to her mother as her “rock,” always supportive of the family. The post featured a joint statement from Barack Obama, Michelle’s brother Craig Robinson, his wife Kelly, and their children.

“Marian Lois Shields Robinson-our mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother-had a way of summing up life’s truths in a word or two, wisdom that seemed innate but was hard-earned,” the statement read. It shared a brief history of Marian’s life, from her upbringing in Chicago to her roles as a nursing aide, teacher, and secretary. She married Fraser Robinson in 1960, and they had two children, Craig and Michelle.

Family trips to drive-in movies and New Year’s Eve parties were among my favorite recollections. Marian was a regular presence throughout Barack and Michelle’s political careers, even holding Barack’s hand on Election Night in 2008.

The statement concluded, “In our sadness, we are lifted up by the extraordinary gift of her life. And we will spend the rest of ours trying to live up to her example.”
