Michael Weatherly, who plays Agent Tony DiNozzo on NCIS, stated that he overstayed his welcome on the program, implying that he should have left much sooner. Weatherly, commenting on his exit at the end of season 13, stated that, while his character’s departure was unavoidable, he had thoroughly enjoyed his time on the program.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Weatherly humorously likened his prolonged tenure on NCIS to being that unwanted guest who lingers too long at a party. Although he expressed curiosity about the future of the NCIS franchise and the possibility of DiNozzo’s involvement in new storylines, he emphasized his eagerness to take a break and indulge in personal interests, such as watching golf.

Weatherly will return to his character as Tony DiNozzo in a spin-off series in 2024, starring Cote de Pablo, who played Ziva David. The spin-off, provisionally dubbed NCIS Europe, will follow DiNozzo and Ziva as they embark on a risky voyage spurred by threats to DiNozzo’s security firm in Paris. The introduction of the series sparked enthusiasm among fans, particularly those who had backed DiNozzo and Ziva’s “TIVA” love. Weatherly and de Pablo thanked fans for their unwavering support and promised an action-packed story full of love, danger, and moments of levity. Filming for NCIS Europe will begin later this year, with the series set to premiere on Paramount+ in 2025.
