Despite only DiNozzo returning in the Ducky tribute episode, NCIS season 21, episode 2, “The Stories We Leave Behind,” honors the character’s history. A large part of that is due to the folks he dealt with while serving as the show’s medical examiner-turned-historian. When the special was being prepared, the authors had hoped to bring back as many old characters as possible for Ducky’s burial, but this proved to be a logistical headache. Despite the nostalgia brought on by the flashbacks and the pain of losing a dear team member, NCIS can still confirm its best team lineup.
As McGee and Alden Parker work to solve Ducky’s final case, they discover the smoking gun in a secret safe hidden beneath one of Dr. Mallard’s group portraits in his office. The four photographs show several permutations of the active lineup throughout the years, including the original group with Cait and the most recent one led by Parker. However, the vault is buried below one that has Gibbs, DiNozzo, McGee, Palmer, Ziva David, Abby, Leon Vance, and Ducky, implying that they are NCIS’ best ensemble.
