This, however, was not on our NCIS bingo board. The franchise has done an excellent job of broadening its appeal with spinoffs and overseas programming such as NCIS: Sydney, and now it will travel back in time to examine the origins of its most renowned character, Leroy Jethro Gibbs.

That’s right: NCIS is following in the footsteps of Young Sheldon and bringing viewers NCIS: Origins.

The prequel series, according to Deadline, would take place in 1991, when Gibbs was hired as a special agent at the new NCIS Camp Pendleton headquarters.

During these years, the character developed his no-nonsense style as well as his friendship with NCIS officer Mike Franks. The latter was a recurring character in the original NCIS, played by Muse Watson, but he died in season 8 after being stabbed.

Gibbs will be followed by NCIS: Origins throughout the early 1990s.

While it is easy to ignore, NCIS: Origins will not be the first time fans will witness a younger version of Gibbs. Between 2008 and 2020, there were seven episodes involving flashbacks to the character, and he was performed in each of these times by Sean Harmon.

Sean Harmon is, naturally, the son of Mark Harmon, the ultimate Gibbs actor. Both men will be executive producers for NCIS: Origins, and Sean even told Deadline how much the character has meant to his family over the years:

Each episode will be produced and narrated by Mark Harmon.

Gina Lucita Monreal and David J. North, the aforementioned Gina and David, are original NCIS writers and producers Gina Lucita Monreal and David J. North.

They will serve as co-showrunners for NCIS: Origins and co-writers for the pilot. Sean or Mark Harmon will not appear onscreen as Gibbs, but the latter will give narration at the beginning and end of each episode.

According to Deadline, no actor has been cast in the part of young Gibbs. However, the show is not set to debut until the 2024-25 season, giving CBS plenty of time to locate the ideal man for the job.
