Well, NCIS lovers, it appears that we’re going to receive a brand-new story from one of the franchise’s most adored characters.
Fans of the CBS drama were devastated when Mark Harmon announced his departure from the show after 19 seasons in 2021. Fans will now be able to reconnect with Leroy Jethro Gibbs in a completely new way.
According to Deadline, CBS has ordered a new series in the famous TV franchise, NCIS: Origins, a prequel show.
Mark and his son, Sean Harmon (who also played a version of Gibbs), will executive produce the show, which will premiere sometime around the 2024-2025 season.
With NCIS writer-producers Gina Lucita Monreal and David J. North committed to the project as producers and showrunners. Furthermore, Mark will narrate the new series.
According to Variety, Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment, said, “We are elated and honored to continue the expansion of the NCIS universe in such a unique and unexpected way.”
Mark Harmon will return to CBS to narrate the deep and enigmatic tale of Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ early years in NCIS: Origins, which will expand on this character’s rich legacy while revisiting fan-favorite characters and meeting new ones.
According to an official press release, NCIS: Origins will take set in 1991 and will feature Gibs as a new special agent at the NCIS Camp Pendleton headquarters. There, he’ll have to earn his spot on a ‘ragtag team commanded by NCIS great Mike Franks.’
While other specifics regarding NCIS: Origins remain unknown, Sean expressed his excitement about bringing his father’s iconic role back to life in a completely new way.
Sean added, “The character of Gibbs has been an important part of my life for 20 years, both in terms of watching my father craft the role and having previously had the honor to play young Gibbs myself.”
I’ve always felt there was a narrative worth telling about his early years, so I’m happy to be joining Gina, David, and my father in presenting this story and revealing a new aspect of this cherished figure.
