Brian Dietzen’s Influence on NCIS Is Greater Than You Think

Brian Dietzen has been a part of the long-running cr1me procedural drama NCIS since its first season.

As Dr. Jimmy Palmer, he began as a recurring character before progressing to a “also starring” role in season six, and finally to the main cast in season ten.

Brian is not only one of the show’s longest-running cast members, but he also holds a distinction that no one else on the cast does.

Beginning with “The Helpers” in season 19, the actor became the first of the main cast members to co-write an episode in 2022.

The episode was such a success that a year later, on February 13 of this year, Brian’s second episode as a co-writer, titled “Old Wounds,” debuted.

“The creative element of coming up with something and putting words in the mouth of these characters that I’ve known so intimately and so closely for so many years just seemed to make a lot of sense,” the star told Variety ahead of the premiere of “The Helpers.”

Throughout the show’s 20-season run, Brian has been a key character.

“Because we have one of the most talented and underappreciated writing staffs on television, I thought that might be seen as hubris, and I didn’t want to overstep, to be honest,” he was initially hesitant.

The father-of-two has previously worked on several short films and even wrote a 2012 feature titled “Congratulations.”

Prior to the airing of “Old Wounds,” the show’s 448th episode, Brian told Parade that it was an honor to see his words come to life on screen.

“Not only do our actors bring their A-game, but so do our other writers, producers, and post-production producers; everyone brings their A-game and elevates what’s put on the page.”

He most recently co-wrote Season 20’s Old Wounds.

“Without the hard work and amazing talents of the people who work on the script, none of it really means anything.” We’re very fortunate to have those people.”
