A Cast Member Explained: How Does Mark Harmon Stay Involved With the Show?

Mark Harmon is no longer a series regular on NCIS, but he still plays an important role on the CBS drama.

Fans of the show will recall that the actor’s long tenure as Leroy Jethro Gibbs ended four episodes into season 19. According to a November 2022 interview with current star Diona Reasonover, who plays Kasie Hinds, he didn’t leave the procedural drama entirely. When she spoke with Entertainment Tonight after writing an episode for Season 20, she revealed that Mark is still an important member of the crew. Furthermore, he pays visits from time to time.

“Mark is still very involved, and he is still a [executive producer],” she said at the time. “He still shows up for set. He actually approached me to tell me how much he enjoys the script, what a sweetie.”

Despite the fact that Mark still frequents his old TV haunts, Mark’s departure from NCIS left the cast and crew concerned about the future. Fortunately, they have continued with new heart-pounding episodes and even secured a season 21 renewal. Diona went on to say that she enjoyed having the opportunity to experiment with different storylines while Mark took on a separate role behind the scenes.

“I think a lot of people, including myself, were concerned,” she said. “This was our first season without our amazing leader.” But it’s also been fun to discover new characters and relationships while trying to figure out all of these new rules. So it’s been exciting, and it’s always nice to do something new, you know what I mean?… You get to do something new every day.”

Although it’s unclear whether The West Wing alum will ever return to NCIS, we know he’s still committed to bringing viewers the best stories. It’s difficult to predict Mark’s next career move.

In February, the actor joined the Gersh talent agency, which represents “award-winning actors, writers, producers, directors, and production talent in film, television, new media, branded content, and stage.” We don’t know if this is a sign that Mark will return to television.

In any case, it’s reassuring to know that Gibbs is still leading the team in some capacity… even if it’s not onscreen.
