“Blue Bloods” on CBS is one of the few shows to have reached the 250-episode mark. Even many of the most popular shows in history don’t last that long. “The Sopranos” on HBO, for example, lasted only 90 episodes.

It also helps that “Blue Bloods” features a diverse cast, lead by the great Tom Selleck as New York City Police Commissioner Frank Reagan.

“Great actors, great characters, and good writing – that’s why it’s still on,” Selleck frankly told Rachael Ray of “Blue Bloods” long-running success after it reached 250 episodes (per Country Living).

The program has been a huge success for Selleck and the other actors who play the Reagans, but Selleck has been around the block more than most. With 86 acting credits under his belt, it may come as a surprise that the actor believes he’s only been fortunate twice in his career.

This is coming from an actor who has been in big films such as “Three Men and a Baby,” as well as countless successful television appearances, including a number of episodes of “Friends” and the last season of “Las Vegas” in 2007 and 2008. Even still, the actor believes he lucked out big time.

Tom Selleck Has Starred in Two Long-Running Television Series.

Aside from “Blue Bloods,” Tom Selleck’s most well-known work is “Magnum P.I.” The show debuted in 1980, but it is still possibly important in popular culture today. The series was even rebooted and shown for four seasons on CBS, the same network that carries “Blue Bloods.”

“I’m not sure where the time went, but we did 163 hours of ‘Magnum,’ and I thought, okay, you can’t get that lucky twice.”When “Blue Bloods” reached 250 episodes, Selleck told Kelly Clarkson on her eponymous talk program, “It was a really lovely little celebration.”

In a separate interview, Selleck stated that he never expected “Blue Bloods” to go so long when it first aired in 2010, but he’s glad it has (via CBS Pittsburgh).

It’s strange to imagine that “Blue Bloods” has outlasted the iconic “Magnum P.I.,” a show that only ended because Selleck himself opted to leave, citing a desire for a better balance between work and family life (per People). He appears to have struck that balance today, but it’s difficult to say that he’s only been successful twice on television, given the mustached legend has headed one other long-running TV franchise.

In addition to “Magnum P.I.” and “Blue Bloods,” Selleck is the executive producer of the “Jesse Stone” franchise. Based on the novels of Robert B. Parker, Selleck plays Jesse Stone, a police chief in Massachusetts. From 2005 through 2012, there were nine TV movies in all. That isn’t 250 episodes, but it is a hugely successful TV franchise. Selleck also revealed that he’s working on a tenth and final installment, claiming that the series has influenced him more than “Blue Bloods” and “Magnum P.I.”

“‘Are we going to see another Jesse Stone?’ is one of the first questions I always get from people I meet.” Yes, ‘Blue Bloods,’ ‘Magnum,’ and even ‘Friends’ are mentioned, but the first request is, ‘Please do another Jesse Stone!'” According to Selleck (via TV Insider). For those keeping track at home, Selleck has three hugely successful television franchises. Selleck’s involvement in the “Jesse Stone” films extends beyond his playing abilities, as he is credited with producing all of them and scripting six of them (according to IMDb).

One could argue that Selleck’s career has been blessed by his ability to take on so many projects that connect with viewers, which he recognizes is unusual for an actor. “It was a happy coincidence that my appetites coincided with what the audience wanted to see me in again.” “That doesn’t happen very often with actors,” the actor stated of his accomplishment.
