What Happened To NCIS star David McCallum?


NCIS returns for Season 21 this winter, but without longtime performer David McCallum, who has played Chief Medical Examiner Donald “Ducky” Mallard for more than 20 years.

While McCallum has made fewer appearances in recent seasons, his absence is a huge change. With Dr. Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen) taking over as the team’s primary doctor, Ducky’s duty switched to NCIS historian, assisting the team on cases as needed.

David McCallum, best known for his roles in NCIS and The Man from U.N.C.L.E., passed away in September 2023 at the age of 90 due to natural causes. With 457 episodes credited to his name in NCIS, his absence was felt deeply.

The NCIS team paid tribute to him during NCIS Day, but sadly, he won’t be returning for the show’s next season. Apart from NCIS, he also made notable appearances in The Great Escape and Sapphire & Steel.
