Kabosu, the Iconic ‘Doge’ Meme Dog, Dies at 18

Kabosu, the Japanese Shiba Inu behind the beloved ‘Doge’ meme, has died at 18 years old. Even occasional internet users are likely familiar with Kabosu’s memorable side-eye glance, which catapulted her to viral fame over a decade ago.

Known for the ‘Doge’ meme, Kabosu’s image was often accompanied by playful captions like “wow very rain” or “much car,” capturing countless humorous moments. Her likeness has been used in countless edits, including wearing sunglasses, appearing on bread loaves, and even becoming the logo for the cryptocurrency Dogecoin.

Kabosu’s health had been declining due to leukemia and liver disease. Her owner, Atsuko Sato, announced her peaceful passing on Instagram on May 24, expressing gratitude for the global support Kabosu received. Sato adopted Kabosu from an animal shelter in 2008, giving her a loving home.

Tributes have poured in from fans worldwide, celebrating the joy Kabosu brought into their lives. One fan poignantly noted, “She was not a good girl. She was the best girl.” Another added, “RIP beloved Kabosu. Thank you for sharing her with us and bringing so much joy through Doge.”

Though her passing is a sorrowful event, Kabosu lived a full and happy life, outliving the average Shiba Inu lifespan. Her legacy of laughter and warmth will endure in the hearts of millions.
