Andre the Giant towered over the wrestling world, becoming an iconic figure in the 1980s WWF. His sheer size, strength, and presence captivated audiences, even as daily life posed constant physical challenges.
Born Andre Roussimoff in 1946, he grew rapidly due to acromegaly, eventually reaching nearly seven feet tall. Despite his intimidating appearance, he longed for an ordinary life and faced frequent bullying and discomfort.
Andre’s wrestling fame skyrocketed in the 1970s, making him internationally recognized. Yet his massive frame complicated travel and daily routines. Revolving doors, cars, and hotel rooms often couldn’t accommodate his enormous body.
Behind the scenes, worsening pain and limited mobility contributed to Andre’s legendary drinking habits. Despite available medical treatments, he declined them, instead channeling his gentler side into roles like Fezzik in The Princess Bride.
Andre passed away at 46 while in France for his father’s funeral. Honoring his wishes required transporting his body to America for cremation. Remembered by few close friends and his daughter, his legacy remains unmatched.
