Why Tom Selleck’s Return Could Hurt Boston Blue More Than Help It

While fans would love to see Tom Selleck return as Frank Reagan, bringing him into Boston Blue too soon could do more harm than good. The upcoming Blue Bloods spinoff is already facing an uphill battle-launching to an audience still mourning the end of a beloved show that many felt ended too early.

If Selleck joins early, viewers might cling to old favorites instead of embracing the new cast. That risks overshadowing fresh faces, like Ghostbusters star Ernie Hudson, who’s stepping into the role of the new family patriarch. Giving Selleck the spotlight again would rob Hudson-and the show itself-of the chance to build something original.

Danny Reagan’s story should be about finding his own way. If Frank keeps showing up, that theme disappears. Constant cameos or phone calls from his father would make the series feel like Blue Bloods Season 15-a continuation CBS clearly didn’t want.

For Boston Blue to succeed, it needs space to become its own story. Selleck’s return would be a powerful moment-but only after the new series earns it.
