Pauley Perrette’s path from a turbulent Southern childhood to Hollywood fame was far from typical. Born in New Orleans in 1969, she moved constantly due to her father’s railroad job, never settling long but developing adaptability and resilience.
Before acting, Perrette studied criminal justice, fascinated by crime and driven by compassion for victims after surviving a violent mugging in Atlanta. While working various jobs to support herself, she gained real-world insight that later shaped her performances.
Her big break came by chance when she overheard a casting call, leading to early TV roles and ultimately Abby Sciuto on NCIS. Her quirky charm, authenticity, and respect for forensic detail made Abby a global fan favorite.
Behind the scenes, tensions grew. A 2016 on-set dog attack led to conflict with co-star Mark Harmon. Reports of safety concerns, HR issues, and a private settlement exposed problems behind Perrette’s exit and eventual retirement.
After Hollywood, she found peace through faith, animal rescue, and advocacy. Surviving a stroke-with help from her rescue dog-deepened her gratitude. Her $22 million estate is pledged to no-kill shelters and the Innocence Project, cementing her legacy of compassion.

Dearest Pauley aka Abby, what a wonderful legacy you have established for animals. I have always had at least one dog in my life and now I’m 90 yrs young. I have admired and enjoyed you on NCIS since the beginning. I truly feel you and Doc made that show what it became and I am not slighting Mark because he portrayed a dedicated Marine to the Max not having been one.The rest of the crew was very good also especially Ziva(Cote or Maria). I fell in love with both of you and wish I was younger but life is what it is. Please take care of yourself and. Know that I am so proud of your accomplishments and care of our furry friends. At present I have a rescue Golden from China and a German Shepherd from somewhere in Calif. love them dearly and you. – Jim Stewart
