What Season 2 of NCIS: Tony & Ziva Could’ve Been – and Why the Show Was Cut Short

It looks like Tony and Ziva’s long-awaited reunion has come to an end. NCIS: Tony & Ziva has been canceled after one season, TV Insider has confirmed. The series, led by Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo, remains available to stream on Paramount+.

In a joint statement, Weatherly and de Pablo thanked the cast, crew, CBS Studios, Paramount+, and especially fans, saying they felt grateful to revisit their iconic characters and give Tony and Ziva a true “happily ever after.”

The spinoff picked up with Tony and Ziva reunited in Paris after years apart. Season 1 followed the couple on the run after Tony’s security company was framed, ultimately ending with their names cleared and the family reunited with their daughter, Tali. The show also starred Amita Suman, Maximilian Osinski, Julian Ovenden, Lara Rossi, Isla Gie, and others.

Showrunner John McNamara revealed that an alternate, darker ending was filmed that would have set up Season 2, but he ultimately chose a quieter, more conclusive finale. Season 2 was planned as a high-stakes romantic thriller that would test Tony and Ziva’s bond, including questions about marriage and their future together.

While fans won’t get that next chapter, the series ended without a cliffhanger-offering closure after years of unresolved tension. For many longtime viewers, NCIS: Tony & Ziva still stands as a meaningful and satisfying epilogue to one of the franchise’s most beloved relationships.
