‘NCIS: Tony & Ziva’ Almost Had a Darker Ending, But Creator Chose Heartwarming Finale

The Paramount+ spinoff NCIS: Tony & Ziva reunited fan-favorites Tony (Michael Weatherly) and Ziva (Cote de Pablo) in a high-stakes adventure filled with AI, car chases, explosions, and a rekindled romance. The finale, “Full Circle,” saw the couple team up with their new crew to rescue their daughter Tali (Isla Gie) and stop villain Jonah (Julian Ovenden), ultimately ending with Tony and Ziva quietly embracing in their Paris apartment.

“There was a very different ending we shot, but I decided to cut it,” creator John McNamara told TheWrap. He hopes the “very dark” original footage could set up a potential Season 2. “The final moment we went with is a credit to Cote and Michael. They gave it a weight and power I didn’t realize it had on the page.”

While fans have praised the series, McNamara said there have been no talks with Paramount+ about a renewal. The finale, however, left several threads open: Jonah dies in prison, Martine (Nassima Benchicou) knows too much about the case, and hacker Boris (Maximilian Osinski) could join Tony and Claudette’s (Amita Suman) security firm. Tony and Ziva’s slow rekindling of their relationship also keeps the door open for future episodes.

“The main feeling is relief,” McNamara said, praising Weatherly, de Pablo, and the international cast and crew for bringing the story to life. The three-episode debut ranked No. 8 on Nielsen’s streaming originals chart for the week of Sept. 1, with 371 million viewing minutes, though more data will be needed to determine if a second season is possible.
