‘NCIS’ Just Set the Stage for Its Biggest Team Shakeup in Years

For much of its run, NCIS has relied on a familiar structure, with Leon Vance overseeing the agency and the Major Case Response Team operating with a stable lineup. However, Season 24 may introduce some of the biggest changes the series has seen in years.

Wilmer Valderrama recently teased “major changes” and “major additions” for the upcoming season. While cast changes are nothing new for NCIS, the death of Director Leon Vance in Season 23 leaves a significant leadership vacancy that won’t be easy to fill.

Unlike the departure of a field agent, replacing Vance is a much bigger challenge. As director for nearly two decades, he played a crucial role in connecting the team’s investigations with the agency’s leadership. Season 24 could explore who takes over that position, and whether a power struggle emerges within NCIS.

The season finale also left fans with unanswered questions surrounding Nick Torres and Mateo, potentially creating even more changes within the team. Valderrama’s comments suggest the series may be planning more than a simple one-for-one replacement.

For years, the Major Case Response Team has operated with a small, consistent group of agents, supported by Jimmy Palmer and Kasie Hines. Season 24 could expand that structure by introducing new agents, new leadership, or even outside figures who challenge the team’s way of operating.

After more than 500 episodes, NCIS has proven it can adapt and evolve. With major storylines still unresolved and new characters potentially on the way, Season 24 could mark the beginning of a very different era for the long-running series.
