A new official release from CBS teases the return of a former Leroy Jethro Gibbs team member in NCIS season 23. After a lackluster previous season, the long-running series is staging a strong comeback in the 2025–2026 TV cycle. Even with only a few episodes aired, season 23 has already tackled the fallout from Parker’s father’s death, revisited McGee’s Thom E. Gemcity persona, and delivered a crossover with NCIS: Origins.
As the show approaches its fall finale, CBS appears ready to roll out more surprises-especially for longtime fans. Paramount confirms that episode 9, titled “Heaven and Nature,” will serve as the fall finale and give Knight her first NCIS: Elite mission.
The twist? Her assignment is to track down a former NCIS team member. Meanwhile, McGee and Torres try to recover a stolen truck of toys for the Navy’s Christmas drive, and Parker uncovers the truth about his mother.
With few candidates who fit the description, Ellie Bishop rises to the top of the list. Her exit in season 18 sent her deep undercover, and the show has offered no updates since-making this the perfect time for her return. Tony and Ziva are less likely, given the events of NCIS: Tony & Ziva, which has them settled in Paris with Tali. Jack Sloane is another possibility, though bringing her back without a Gibbs reunion may lack impact.
Regardless of who returns, season 23 is clearly leaning into nostalgia. CBS has already revived several familiar faces across the franchise, including Vera in NCIS: Origins alongside younger versions of Gibbs and Franks. Bringing back another former team member would only strengthen that nostalgic momentum.
