NCIS Season 23 ended with a dramatic cliffhanger that left fans wondering what happened after a gunshot rang out during a tense confrontation between Special Agent Nick Torres and Mateo, the newly discovered son of Timothy McGee.
Torres confronted Mateo after noticing suspicious activity involving NCIS computers. As tensions rose, Mateo warned that “they could be watching” before a shot was fired off-screen, leaving viewers unsure who was hit and what secrets Mateo may be hiding.
Fortunately, fans won’t have to worry about losing a major character. Showrunner Steven D. Binder confirmed that someone was shot but suggested the incident is unlikely to result in a death. He explained that the story is more interesting when characters survive and deal with the aftermath rather than being k1lled off.
When Will NCIS Return?
While CBS has not announced an exact premiere date, NCIS is expected to return for Season 24 in October 2026. The series will continue airing on Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. ET.

New Spin-Off Joining the Franchise
Following NCIS, viewers will also see the debut of NCIS: New York. The new series stars LL Cool J, reprising his role as Sam Hanna from NCIS: Los Angeles, alongside Scott Caan.
Set in New York City, the series follows Sam Hanna as he joins the local NCIS field office and partners with a new team handling high-stakes cases in one of the country’s busiest and most important locations. NCIS: Origins will continue airing afterward with its third season.
