Everything Revealed about NCIS: Origins – Mark Harmon’s Comeback and the Returning Characters

NCIS fans rejoiced earlier this week when it was announced that the series will show a new spin-off, and instead of branching out to a new place, it will branch out in time.

CBS has ordered NCIS: Origins, a spin-off prequel series to the flagship NCIS, which will also include the return of Mark Harmon as Leroy Jethro Gibbs.

Read on for more information on the impending prequel series, including its description and cast of returning characters, as well as a possible premiere date and which NCIS family member came up with the idea in the first place…

What is the plot of NCIS: Origins?

NCIS: Origins will follow a young Gibbs as he is recruited as a special agent at the NCIS Camp Pendleton office, which is led by NCIS icon Mike Franks (a recurring character on the main series).

The series is set in 1991, years before the original series premieres, and will let a fresh, younger actor to take on the role of Leroy Jethro Gibbs, while Mark, 72, will serve as narrator, much like Young Sheldon.

What inspired the concept?

Sean Harmon, Mark’s son who played a younger version of Gibbs on NCIS for seven episodes between 2008 and 2020, came up with the idea for the show.

Sean, 35, will executive produce the series alongside his father, saying in a statement: “For the past 20 years, the character of Gibbs has been a crucial part of my life, both in terms of watching my father construct the role and having previously had the honor of playing young Gibbs myself.”

I’ve always believed there was a narrative to be told about his early years, so I’m excited to be moving into a producing role alongside [NCIS writers-producers Gina Lucita Monreal, David J. North] and my father as we tell this story and unveil a new side of this iconic character.

Which characters will make a comeback?

We know that Mark Harmon’s Gibbs will return, and he’ll be joined by Mike Franks, played by Muse Watson on the main series, and Special Agent Vera Strickland, Franks’ old partner, played by Roma Maffia on NCIS.

Who will play the characters in the prequel series?

So far, no casting decision has been made, though it has been stated that neither Sean Harmon nor Ben Turner Dixon, who played the young Mike Franks on NCIS, will return to the part. Instead, new talent will be sought for the series.

When will the show premiere? And how can I see it?

NCIS: Origins will air as part of CBS’s autumn lineup, and episodes will also be available on Paramount+. A specific date has yet to be revealed.

  1. Sean would be best suited part of young Gibbs, but Termine for him to pay another part in the show being produced. We can’t always have what we want but as Mark harmon Makes an occasional appearance and has a part in the production. It will still be a great series. Most of the fans will continue to be fans.. age takes a toll on all of us, and therefore some need to retire and enjoy the rest of their life doing what they really want and we can’t find fault with that. Gibbs and Mark will always be remembered and loved Gibbs for NCIS and Mark for the wonderful human being, he has always been. 🙏❤️🙏

    • The new show is supposed to go back to when Gibbs got out of the Marine Corps, and started working for Mike Franks at NIS (later NCIS). At that time McGee, DiNozzo, Torres, and the others were probably still kids. The only one , who would have been around Gibbs’ age would have been Vance. So they weren’t a part of his life at that time.

    • McGee didn’t join the team much later, Not sure how long Tony and Gibbs worked together before the original show
started and Kate joined! Oh, and maybe Abby will come
back too at some point! Ya I’m loving Kasie but Abby was a great character!!!

    • I read somewhere that Harmon and Dawber were going to switch roles, on-screen and in real life. Pam, has taken her time, probably since the murder of her co-star Rebecca Schaffer, and has been out of the spotlight, raising her and Mark’s kids. I think I read somewhere, that her being on the show, was a way to “turn the tables” for them. Mark would retire, and Pam would restart her acting career, taking over as Gibbs’ replacement.

  2. Oh my goodness! I am so excited if this is true!
I have missed Mark Harmon as being the boss. I missed him so much thatbI would catch old episodes on Sundance and We.
I have been with the NCIS from the very beginning.
I loved when Mark’s wife when she came on the show with him. (I even loved her from the Mork and Mindy show).
Actually I have loved each of the new characters as well. They are all good actors (males) and attresses (females). Just keep the show on please. I love it!

  3. I dont understand why they didnt have CGIS Special Agent Abigal Boron take over for Gibbs. the team knew her and liked her. I thought she would have been a perfect fit

  4. I feel that Gibbs should have been replaced by Dwayne “King” Pride from NCIS New Orleans. Some of the other characters could have transitioned over too!

  5. As a”Forever NCIS Fan”, there will NEVER be a show to replace the early cast and it will always be my favorite HOWEVER, Mark Harmon has been loyal to NCIS and deserves this special time in his life, and i have encouraged him, in texts, to savor this time! ❤️ I trust that his ideas will be something to look forward to! !
