The End of an Era? NCIS Prepares for Its Most Significant Team Change in Years

When Mark Harmon left NCIS in Season 19, many fans wondered if the series could survive without Leroy Jethro Gibbs, the character who had defined the show for nearly two decades. Four years later, NCIS has not only survived but appears ready to fully embrace a future beyond its iconic leader.

In the seasons following Gibbs’ departure, much of the focus centered on whether the show could continue without him. However, the introduction of Gary Cole as Alden Parker helped the series establish a new identity.

Rather than trying to replace Gibbs, Parker brought his own leadership style, allowing the show to evolve naturally while maintaining the team dynamic fans love.

The series has also been careful not to rely heavily on Gibbs’ legacy. References to the character have been limited and meaningful, preserving his importance without overshadowing the current cast.

Season 23 further shifted the spotlight to the present-day team, with major developments including the death of Rocky Carroll’s character, Director Leon Vance, and a dramatic cliffhanger involving Nick Torres and McGee’s newly discovered son, Mateo.

As Season 24 approaches, the focus is firmly on Parker, McGee, Torres, Knight, Palmer, and Kasie. After spending years proving it could continue without Gibbs, NCIS now seems ready to enter a completely new chapter – one defined by its current characters and future storylines rather than its past.
