‘NCIS’: Everything Cote de Pablo Has Said About the Possibility of Returning to the Show

For years, NCIS fans believed that Cote de Pablo’s character Ziva David had been k1ll3d off the program. When de Pablo left the CBS procedural in season 11, Ziva was still alive.

But when Michael Weatherly’s Tony DiNozzo said his final goodbyes at the end of season 13, it was because of Ziva’s d3ath and the sh0ck1ng discovery that he and the former Mossad agent had a daughter called Tali.

NCIS fans were taken aback in the final seconds of season 16 when Ziva arrived in Gibbs’ (Mark Harmon) basement. Ziva had pretended to die in order to protect her family! Will she return for further episodes in the future?

Everything de Pablo has stated about the potential of returning to CBS’ most-watched show is listed here.

Ziva David can always return to ‘NCIS’

When de Pablo quit the show after eight seasons in 2013, she told TV Guide that her reason for departing was personal.

She did, however, state at the time that Ziva may theoretically return because the character did not die.

“Leaving was not something I had considered for a long time.” “It was an extraordinarily difficult — and at times terrifying — experience,” de Pablo added. “The best part of this episode is that Ziva does not die.” As long as a character does not die, he or she can always return.”

Cote de Pablo declined to return following Michael Weatherly’s departure.

When de Pablo left the series, Ziva was still alive. However, when Weatherly was preparing to leave in 2016, they appeared to have k1ll3d off Ziva’s character. According to Fox News, de Pablo chose not to attend Weatherly’s farewell because she did not believe Ziva was being treated with respect.

“I choose not to,” de Pablo told a Babson College audience. “I spent eight years creating and loving this character.” I felt or perceived that the character was not being treated with the respect she deserved. So there is no money in the world (would make me stay). I’m not going back unless someone writes something truly spectacular.”

Ziva David had an appearance in season 17 of ‘NCIS.’

De Pablo made a surprise entrance in the last moments of season 16 and returned for a four-episode plot arc in season 17. She told Entertainment Tonight at the time that she was seeking for a reason to return to NCIS.

“I hoped that something like this would happen at some point, and it’s just so the stars aligned and here I am with this guy,” de Pablo remarked before hugging co-star Mark Harmon. “I said give me a compelling cause to return.”

Cote de Pablo’s second exit was not like her first.

De Pablo also stated ahead of her season 17 return that she was open to returning for additional episodes in the future. She noted that her second exit from the show was not like her first.

“I’ll leave it at that, it’s a different walk away,” she teased. “It’s a lovely walk away.”

The boss of ‘NCIS’ says they are always open to another Ziva David appearance.

Now that de Pablo has made her homecoming and fans have confirmation that Ziva is alive and well in Paris with Tony and Tali, it’s unlikely she’ll return anytime soon.

However, in December 2020, executive producer Steve Binder told TVLine that they are always open to another Ziva appearance.

“It will always be, ‘Let’s not take Cote and stick her in.'” “It’s more like, ‘Let’s come up with a tale first, and see whether it’s anything worth bringing that character back,'” Binder stated. “We’ve essentially played all of the cards there are to play [with Ziva], so we don’t have any intentions right now.” “However, we’re always open to it.”
