After over two decades on air, NCIS has become an iconic part of American television. However, as the show enters its 22nd season, it might be time for the series to consider a graceful end. Here’s why.
The Formula’s Wear and Tear
While NCIS’s solid formula has long been a source of comfort for fans, it now runs the risk of becoming out of date. The common case structures involving naval or military personnel, combined with well-trodden character arcs, have become predictable.
Occasional genre-bending episodes, such as the latest Western-themed one, may not always succeed in instilling new vigor. These variances are appreciated, but they highlight a struggle to maintain the show feeling creative.
Filling the Gibbs Void
The departure of Mark Harmon, who played Leroy Jethro Gibbs, left a significant gap. Gibbs wasn’t just a character; he was the show’s emotional backbone, with gravitas that’s difficult to replace. While actors like Gary Cole have brought new life to the series, they simply can’t fill the Gibbs-shaped void. Ongoing cast changes further strain the show’s identity, making it hard to recapture its former magic.
Franchise Fatigue
The NCIS franchise’s expansion has stretched its resources thinly. Spin-offs such as NCIS: Hawai’i have struggled to acquire traction, with recent cancellations. CBS’s congested schedule and competitive streaming market suggest that there is little room for the original NCIS, let alone any spin-offs.
Preserving a Legacy
NCIS could end on a high note, much like other beloved series have done, leaving a proud legacy rather than one stretched thin. Concluding the show while it’s still admired allows it to retain its status as a top crime drama. After over 21 seasons, NCIS has more than fulfilled its mission, and a dignified farewell could ensure it remains a cherished chapter in TV history.
