NCIS Update: Abby’s Return Uncertain Among Original Characters

blank

Season 21 is the first season in which no original NCIS characters appear. The streak came to an end when David McCallum died, as reflected in Ducky’s fate. It’s worth noting that, despite their long tenure on the program, Sean Murray’s Timothy McGee and Brian Dietzen’s Jimmy Palmer were not among the original cast members. Both made their debuts in NCIS season 1, but were introduced later in the season. Even then, they usually played recurring roles.

So far, only Dr. Mallard and Sasha Alexander’s Caitlin Todd, who died in the season 2 finale at the hands of Ziva David’s half-brother, are barred from returning to the police procedural. Everyone else may return at any time. Harmon’s likely return leaves Abby as the only original cast member who has not returned since quitting her position. Even if Gibbs does not return to the main NCIS series, the character will live on in NCIS: Origins, which will explore his early days as a member of Mike Franks’ ragtag squad of detectives at Camp Pendleton.

As previously said, reintroducing Abby into NCIS’s storyline should be straightforward. Given her expertise, any team in the universe would be thankful for any assistance she can provide. That being said, it would be wonderful to see Abby working in her former lab at the agency’s headquarters in Washington, DC. At this point, it will also come down to CBS and Perrette’s opinion on whether the show needs to see Abby again.
