Mark Harmon May Return To NCIS in the Future, According To A Co-Star

NCIS fans were devastated when Leroy Gibbs left the CBS show after nearly two decades in 2021.

Actor Mark Harmon is frequently asked if he will return to the popular show, and his friend and co-star, Rocky Carroll, believes it is possible.

Rocky discussed the show’s 20th anniversary in a Q&A with TV Insider, as well as the possibility of Mark reprising his role as Gibbs for it.

“We might see Gibbs again,” he said. I believe that as long as this show is on the air, there will always be a hint that we might see Gibbs again.”

“Gibbs is the moral compass,” Rocky added. He’s the moral compass we’d all like to have.”

The actor left the popular show in season 19, and he discussed his decision in a special featurette on the show’s season 19 DVD release.

Mark Harmon may return to NCIS for the show’s 20th anniversary.

He sat down to discuss his character’s legacy, as well as his thoughts on how the show wrapped up his storyline, and admitted that the opportunity to tackle “fresh” and “challenging” material is what kept him returning to the drama season after season, alluding to the possibility that after almost two decades on the show, he no longer felt that way.

Following Mark’s onscreen departure, Showrunner Steve Binder issued a statement in which he heavily implied Gibbs could return in future seasons.

“As an executive producer and dear friend, Mark continues to be an integral part of the show’s fabric,” it said. Staying true to our characters has always been our north star, and that truth has always guided the stories we tell and where those characters go.

“In terms of Gibbs’ future, as long-time fans of the show may have noticed over the years… never count Leroy Jethro Gibbs out.”
