Charles Floyd Johnson, executive producer of NCIS, has revealed which A-list movie star was considered for the role of Leroy Gibbs before Mark Harmon was recruited. Harmon’s portrayal of Gibbs has been a franchise fixture, with the character appearing in all 19 seasons of the cr1me drama. Harmon is best remembered for playing Gibbs throughout the franchise’s history due to his long tenure in the role.
Johnson revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that the part of Gibbs in NCIS was originally considered for Harrison Ford. The executive producer described how Ford was a popular choice, but they eventually chose Harmon. See what Johnson had to say about it below:
I remember Harrison Ford was a name that everyone considered for Gibbs since he was so ideal. But I don’t think it ever got much further than throwing out a name.
How Would NCIS Be Different With Harrison Ford..?
Because Harmon’s Gibbs is regarded as a classic TV character, it’s unknown whether Ford’s portrayal of the NCIS agent would be similar. Ford would undoubtedly put his own touch on the character, distinguishing him from the version shown in the series. Perhaps Ford’s Gibbs would be a more serious or daring figure, similar to his past performances as Indiana Jones and Jack Ryan in Patriot Games.
However, Gibbs’ time in the franchise would have been jeopardized due to Ford’s numerous cinematic endeavors throughout the years. Harmon left NCIS in season 19, but considering Ford’s connections to brands like Indiana Jones and Star Wars, he might not have stayed for as long. This may have caused a gap in the crew earlier in the series, causing the development of the story and characters to diverge dramatically.
Even though it would be interesting to watch Ford play Gibbs, Harmon managed to make the character a memorable series figure. Harmon might return as Gibbs in NCIS later on, solidifying him as the proper actor for the team leader. While watching Ford play Gibbs in the series would have been entertaining, Harmon appears to have been the ideal pick for the job.
