Liverpool Footballer Diogo Jota Dies at 28 in Car Crash in Spain

Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota has tragically died at the age of 28 following a car crash in Cernadilla, Zamora, Spain. The accident, which occurred around 12:30 a.m. local time, also claimed the life of his younger brother, André Silva, 25, who played for Penafiel in Portugal’s second division.

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) confirmed the devastating news on Thursday morning. Spanish authorities believe the crash was caused by a burst tire during an overtaking maneuver. The car, reportedly a Lamborghini, caught fire following the crash.

Jota had recently married longtime partner Rute Cardoso just two weeks ago. The couple shared three young children.

“Apart from being a fantastic player with nearly 50 caps, Diogo was an extraordinary person with a contagious joy,” the FPF said in a statement. Jota represented Portugal 49 times and helped the national team win the UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025.

Jota played a key role in Liverpool’s Premier League title win last season, contributing six goals and four assists in 26 matches. His club career began at Paços de Ferreira, followed by stints at Atlético Madrid, Porto, and Wolverhampton Wanderers. He joined Liverpool in 2020, going on to win the Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup.

“Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota,” the club said, requesting privacy for the family during this time.

Tributes poured in from across the football world. Cristiano Ronaldo wrote, “It does not make sense… Rest in peace, Diogo and André. We will all miss you.” Liverpool teammate Darwin Núñez added, “There are no words of comfort for so much pain… I will always remember your smile.”

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard also paid tribute: “RIP Diogo 💔 Condolences to his family and friends during this incredibly sad time.”
