A new set image from NCIS: Origins reveals Kyle Schmid as a young Mike Franks, bearing a striking resemblance to the original portrayal by Muse Watson. The upcoming CBS prequel spinoff will delve into Franks’ significant role in Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ early career at NCIS. Schmid joins Austin Stowell, who plays a young Gibbs, and Caleb Martin Foote as Special Agent Benjamin “Randy” Randolf, a new character in the NCIS universe.
Mariel Molino posted the set photo on Instagram, which features Schmid, Stowell, and Foote. The image has heightened anticipation for the prequel, which delves into Franks and Gibbs’ close mentor-mentee connection in the early 1990s.
Their closeness, similar to brotherhood, was critical in defining Gibbs’ character as portrayed in the main series.
Franks’ character was introduced in NCIS Season 3 and remained integral through numerous storylines, particularly those involving Gibbs. Despite his early death in Season 8 at the hands of serial k1ller Jonas Cobb, Franks continued to appear in Gibbs’ visions, highlighting his lasting impact on Gibbs’ life.
The prequel tries to depict the evolution of Franks and Gibbs’ unbreakable bond, a critical component of the show’s popularity. Harmon’s role as producer and narrator for NCIS: Origins has sparked discussion regarding future cameos by both Harmon and Watson. While Schmid is supposed to be the major actor representing Franks, Watson’s involvement in the creative process suggests that he has provided direction for Schmid’s performance.
As NCIS: Origins begins filming, fans are eager to see how it enriches the backstory of Gibbs and Franks, further solidifying their legendary partnership in the NCIS franchise.
