Donnie Wahlberg’s Boston Blue Idea Could Give Tom Selleck the Perfect Comeback

Boston Blue is currently in development as the official Blue Bloods spinoff, led by longtime series star Donnie Wahlberg. The original CBS hit ran for 14 seasons (2010–2024), following the Reagan family, an Irish Catholic clan devoted to law enforcement, headed by patriarch Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck).
Despite strong ratings for season 14, CBS decided to end Blue Bloods and move forward with Boston Blue. Wahlberg will reprise his role as Detective Danny Reagan, now based in Boston, though no other original cast members are yet confirmed. However, Wahlberg has hinted that Selleck could make an appearance – possibly as Frank Reagan – in the new series.
A Natural Crossover Between Boston and New York
Wahlberg noted that Boston and New York are geographically close, making crossovers between law enforcement in both cities entirely believable. This opens the door for appearances from Blue Bloods characters, including Frank Reagan, whose connection to Danny remains central to the franchise.
How Frank Reagan Could Return
As New York City’s Police Commissioner, Frank could travel to Boston to consult on a multi-state case, creating a logical reason for him to appear in Boston Blue. This setup would let Selleck and Wahlberg reignite their dynamic while honoring the legacy of Blue Bloods.
Keeping the Reagan Legacy Alive
Blue Bloods thrived because of its focus on family – particularly the Reagan clan’s bond, highlighted by their iconic weekly dinners. Even though Danny’s move to Boston means those moments can’t be recreated, the show’s heart lies in those relationships. Having Selleck guest-star, even briefly, would help Boston Blue feel like a true continuation rather than a complete reboot.
While some fans wish Blue Bloods had continued for a 15th season, Boston Blue offers the chance for fresh stories that still honor the show’s family roots – with the possibility of seeing Frank Reagan at the center once again.
