‘Boston Blue’ Bosses Reveal Sean’s Recasting Plans and Danny’s Romantic Future After Shocking Return: ‘Long-Distance Love Is Real’

When Blue Bloods ended last year after 14 seasons, many questions remained about the Reagan family. The new spinoff, Boston Blue, led by Donnie Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan, answers one of the biggest: what happened with his relationship with Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez).

In the Blue Bloods finale, Danny finally asked Baez out for pizza. In the premiere of Boston Blue, they’re shown in bed together, continuing their banter with a romantic twist. “We wanted to continue Danny Reagan’s story in real time and explore where he and Baez were after the finale,” says co-showrunner Brandon Margolis. While Ramirez hasn’t signed on for more episodes yet, her character’s long-distance relationship with Danny will continue.

Danny partners with Detective Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green) in Boston, taking a new role in the police department to stay close to his son, Sean (now played by Mika Amonsen, replacing Andrew Terraciano), who was injured on the job. Margolis explains the recast reflects a new chapter for both Danny and Sean, with Mika bringing fresh energy to the role.

The spinoff keeps a tone similar to Blue Bloods and includes appearances by familiar faces, like Bridget Moynahan’s Erin Reagan, who arrives in Boston in the premiere. “We truly mean to expand the universe,” says co-showrunner Brandon Sonnier. “The Reagans still exist, living the lives we watched for so long.”

Family traditions remain central, too. Every episode will feature a Shabbat dinner, continuing the sense of family connection that made Blue Bloods resonate with viewers. Sonnier adds, “It’s an organic way to continue the universe. Sitting down to dinner is how families connect, whether it’s the Reagans or the Silvers.”
