Inside the ‘Blue Bloods’ Spinoff: Meet the Familiar Faces and New Stars

The world of Blue Bloods lives on with CBS’s new spinoff, Boston Blue, led by Donnie Wahlberg reprising his iconic role as Detective Danny Reagan.

This time, Danny trades New York City for Boston, joining the Boston Police Department and teaming up with Detective Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green). Lena hails from a prominent local family – her grandfather is famed pastor Edwin Peters (Ernie Hudson), and her mother is Boston District Attorney Mae Silver (Gloria Reuben).

The family ties run deep on the force: Lena’s stepsister Sarah (Maggie Lawson) and brother Jonah (Marcus Scribner) are also Boston PD officers. Danny’s son Sean (now played by Mika Amonsen) partners with Jonah after moving north amid an NYPD hiring freeze.

While Wahlberg is the only Blue Bloods regular in the main cast, fans were treated to familiar faces in the Oct. 17 premiere. Bridget Moynahan made a surprise appearance as Erin Reagan, who rushes to Boston after Sean is injured in a fire. Danny’s former partner – and now love interest – Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez) also appeared briefly in an emotional scene.

Co-showrunner Brandon Sonnier teased to Variety that Baez’s story isn’t over: “Long-distance relationships are a thing. It’s only a four-hour drive from New York to Boston.” He added that more visits from Blue Bloods favorites are on the way.

Boston Blue isn’t just a spinoff – it’s an expansion of the universe,” Sonnier said. “The Reagans are still out there, living those lives we’ve all followed for years.”

Blue Bloods ended its 14-season run in December 2024, starring Wahlberg, Moynahan, Will Estes, Len Cariou, Tom Selleck, and Vanessa Ray.
