Blue Bloods’ Danny Spinoff Gets Even More Meaningful Thanks to Its Powerful New City Setting

More than a year after Blue Bloods was canceled, CBS has officially ordered a spinoff series starring Donnie Wahlberg as Detective Danny Reagan – and its Boston setting makes it even more special.

The long-running police drama, created by Robin Green and Mitchell Burgess, wrapped after 14 seasons and 293 episodes despite fan campaigns to save it. Now, the Blue Bloods legacy continues with Boston Blue, which has received a straight-to-series order for the 2025–2026 TV season. The new show comes from creators Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis.

As the title suggests, Boston Blue follows Danny Reagan as he transfers from the NYPD to the Boston Police Department, where he’s paired with a new partner, Detective Lena Peters – “the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family.” Casting for Lena hasn’t been announced yet. It’s unclear what prompts Danny’s move, especially since the Blue Bloods finale hinted at a new chapter with Detective Maria Baez.

For Wahlberg, Boston Blue marks a homecoming. A proud Boston native, he grew up there alongside his nine siblings, including actor Mark Wahlberg. Even if the show isn’t filmed entirely on location, its Boston backdrop holds personal significance for the actor after more than a decade filming in New York.

Boston also makes sense from a storytelling perspective – close enough to New York for possible Blue Bloods cameos, but far enough to let Danny establish a fresh start. With Wahlberg leading the charge, Boston Blue promises to honor the spirit of the original while giving fans a new chapter to follow.
