“Blue Bloods” has traditionally tracked the lives of a family with a deep history in the New York City Police Department, with the undisputed patriarch of this law-abiding family being the now-retired New York City Police Commissioner Henry Reagan (Len Cariou).
However, the show’s principal role is his son, Frank Reagan (played by Tom Selleck), who has subsequently taken over as commissioner, while his children hold various positions in the NYPD and the district attorney’s office.
Len Cariou’s role in the show is considered to be a few decades older than Selleck’s.
However, even though the show sells this relationship so effectively that you believe the age difference, the truth is that Henry and Frank should have been brothers rather than father and son.

Despite playing Selleck’s father on “Blue Bloods,” Cariou is only around five years his senior – Selleck was born in 1945 (per Walk of Fame), and Cariou was born in 1939 (through TCM), thus the actual age gap between them is only about five years.
Of course, Cariou’s white hair and Selleck’s darker brown hair help to give the impression that one is considerably older than the other.
Frank’s children, on the other hand, are played by actors who are far younger than Selleck.
On the program, Donnie Wahlberg, Bridget Moynahan, and Will Estes all play Frank’s children and are all between 25 and 35 years younger than Selleck – a considerably more credible age gap between a father and his children.
Both Selleck and Cariou began their careers as actors in the 1960s, but Selleck rose to prominence as Thomas Magnum in the CBS blockbuster “Magnum P.I.” Cariou, on the other hand, has almost 80 on-screen credits to his name.
