NCIS: How Gibbs’ Departure Affected on Work of McGee as Thom E. Gemcity

Thom E. Gemcity is a name we haven’t heard in a long time — and one that Jessica Knight (Katrina Law) has never heard on NCIS. With “Higher Education,” that changes.

When Nick Torres (Wilmer Valderrama) and Knight arrive at work, Timothy McGee (Sean Murray) reveals that he is preoccupied with a “personal project”: Thom E. Gemcity is back! That’s how Knight discovers McGee is a novelist, the “John Grisham of NCIS,” as she describes him (he’d say Tom Clancy), and who exactly is in his books.

“What mystery will Special Agent Tibbs tackle next?” Torres inquires. “What is the name of your main character, Special Agent Tibbs?” In disbelief, Knight inquires. “Because Gibbs was unable to clear legal?” “Gibbs and Tibbs are polar opposites,” McGee insists. In terms of the story, “since Gibbs is off doing his thing, I figured LJ Tibbs deserves some R&R.” You’ll just have to wait and see what happens next.”

Torres does recommend that he introduce a new character: badass Miami detective Rick Sorres. He’ll first be seen undercover in a seedy downtown bar, where a mysterious woman will start making out with him at random. He pitches his idea all the way to the cr1me scene, which is how Dr. Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen) learns of McGee’s plans to resume writing. McGee explains that now that the children are older, he and Delilah (Margo Harshman) can do whatever they want. Alden Parker (Gary Cole) only speaks up to make sure there isn’t a thinly disguised version of himself in it.

Later, after a brief disagreement about a student with whom Delilah was having weekly meetings (and who was the team’s v1ctim), she expresses her regret at witnessing him torture himself over his novel. “Novel is going well,” McGee says, before admitting, “I’m just having trouble getting started.”

That is not entirely correct. Delilah observes that he has been stuck on the third page for weeks and has “barely written a word since Gibbs left for Alaska.” “It’s not Gibbs who makes you great.” McGee, on the other hand, is concerned that “Thom E. Gemcity may never have another idea without him.” Delilah disagrees and suggests that he simply needs a new muse.

Of course, she’s correct — and by the end of the episode, he’s found one. He spent the entire night writing more than he had in months. Delilah says, “Your fans will be so excited to read a new Deep Six mystery,” but McGee reminds her, “LJ Tibbs is retired, remember?” So I’ve created a new main character who I believe fans will enjoy as much as I do. Delena Flemming is a stunningly beautiful and brilliant cryptologist.”

“Does Delena get to solve cr1mes alongside her equally brilliant husband?” Delilah inquires. “All you can do is wait and see,” he says.
