Heartfelt Moment: Tom Selleck Fights Back Tears in Final Blue Bloods Scene, Says Donnie Wahlberg

Donnie Wahlberg’s last day filming Blue Bloods became far more emotional than he expected – thanks to a surprise visit from Tom Selleck.
“Tom Selleck never really shows up in Donnie’s scenes,” Wahlberg, 55, shared during his October 16 appearance on Today With Hoda and Jenna. “It’s Danny world and Frank Reagan world.”
Wahlberg, who’s played Detective Danny Reagan since 2010, explained that he and Selleck – who plays his father, Commissioner Frank Reagan – rarely work together outside of family dinner scenes. But on his final day on set this summer, Selleck, 79, quietly showed up to watch Wahlberg film with Marisa Ramirez (Detective Maria Baez).
“He was there watching. I looked across the room and saw him standing there,” Wahlberg recalled. “Tom’s a serious, focused man who doesn’t like to show vulnerability – but he had tears in his eyes. That memory still brings up a lot for me.”
Seeing the Magnum, P.I. legend emotional meant everything to Wahlberg. “I grew up watching him on TV, and now he was there to support me on my last day. It filled me with tremendous humility,” he said. “It’s not sadness – it’s gratitude.”
Although filming is complete, fans haven’t seen the end yet. CBS split the show’s 14th and final season into two parts, with the final eight “farewell episodes” beginning Friday, October 18.
“There will be satisfaction,” promised Abigail Hawk (Abigail Baker), adding that the finale delivers “sadness, joy, and beautiful closure.”
As for Wahlberg, he’s embracing the ending with appreciation. “This was an amazing opportunity and a wonderful experience,” he said. “I made life-long friendships. So, no sadness – just emotion.”
