NCIS Star Sean Murray Responds to Rumors He’s Leaving the Series

Sean Murray, who has portrayed Timothy McGee since NCIS season 1, is addressing new speculation about his future on the long-running CBS drama. Although he appeared in only eight episodes during the show’s first season, he became a series regular in season 2 and has remained one of the core faces of the franchise.

With season 23 underway, fan chatter has grown about whether McGee may be entering a potential exit arc, especially after hints that he’s frustrated in his current role and exploring other interests like writing. The fear isn’t unfounded-NCIS has seen major departures before, including Mark Harmon’s exit as Gibbs in 2021.

Speaking to TVLine, Murray acknowledged that rumors are inevitable on a show known for unexpected twists. He reminded viewers that “no one is ever quite safe,” citing the shocking season 2 death of Caitlin Todd as an example. Still, while he didn’t confirm or deny any long-term plans for McGee, he did tease notable surprises ahead in season 23.

Murray hinted that upcoming episodes will feature moments longtime fans will “really enjoy” because they’re unexpected and different from what the series usually does.

For now, nothing indicates that McGee is headed for a dramatic send-off. As the character who has appeared in more episodes than anyone since Harmon’s departure, any future exit would need to feel meaningful and authentic. It’s also possible that by the end of season 23, fans will see that McGee isn’t going anywhere after all.
