NCIS has undergone several major changes in recent years. The departure of Mark Harmon’s Gibbs in Season 19 and the passing of David McCallum in 2023, which was followed by an emotional farewell to Ducky in Season 21, have left fans wondering who might leave next.
That naturally raises the question: is Sean Murray, who plays Special Agent Timothy McGee, planning to exit?
Murray has been a mainstay since Season 1, and while it’s fair to assume he might want a change after two decades, there’s no sign he’s leaving. In an interview with TV Insider, Murray sounded confident about the show’s future, saying he expects NCIS to return for Season 22.
He didn’t hint at stepping away, and recent episodes like “The Plan,” which gave McGee new personal twists, show the writers are still finding fresh angles for his character.
In a 2023 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Murray said he’s “so happy where I’m at” and isn’t looking to move on anytime soon. While he acknowledged that one day NCIS will end, he said he’d like to explore something completely different when that time comes.
For now, the NCIS universe remains strong with popular spinoffs like NCIS: Hawai’i and the upcoming prequel NCIS: Origins. And until Sean Murray says otherwise, it’s safe to assume McGee isn’t going anywhere.
