The Real Reason Sasha Alexander Left NCIS – ‘She Wanted Out’

When NCIS fans watched Special Agent Kate Todd meet her shocking end in the Season 2 finale, the twist left viewers stunned and heartbroken. But behind the scenes, the emotional exit wasn’t just a creative decision – it was Sasha Alexander’s own choice.

According to NCIS creator and former showrunner Donald Bellisario, the actress came to him in tears, asking to leave the show. “Sasha came into my office with tears in her eyes and said, ‘I just can’t work this hard,’” Bellisario told the Chicago Tribune. “It’s a tough show to make. We work very long hours, and Sasha just didn’t feel she was physically up to that kind of time and commitment.”

At the time, NCIS was filming an intense 24 episodes per season – nearly 11 months of grueling, 17-hour workdays. For Alexander, the workload simply became too much.

Years later, the Rizzoli & Isles star still stands by her decision. “People don’t realize that on a network show, you make 24 episodes a year – that’s 10½ months a year, 17 hours a day. It’s hardcore,” she told TV Guide. “I really believe that if I had stayed, I wouldn’t be where I am today – happily married, with two kids, and doing the creative work I want to do.”

While her departure left a lasting mark on NCIS fans, Alexander’s decision ultimately allowed her to find the balance she needed – both personally and professionally. And even though Kate Todd’s time was cut short, her legacy continues to live on in the hearts of fans who still miss her sharp wit and quiet strength.
