Rocky Carroll Speaks Out After Shocking NCIS Death Exit: “It Wasn’t My Decision”

NCIS stunned fans in its 500th episode with the death of Director Leon Vance, played by Rocky Carroll, marking the end of his 18-season run on the series.

In the March 24 episode, Vance is fatally shot while uncovering a conspiracy threatening to destroy NCIS from within. Although it initially appears he might survive, his injuries prove fatal, delivering one of the show’s most emotional moments.

Carroll revealed that leaving the show was not his decision. Instead, the idea came from the network and producers, who wanted to create a major, unforgettable storyline for the milestone episode. Executive producer Steven D. Binder explained that the plot centered on Vance saving the agency at the cost of his own life.

While the news initially surprised him, Carroll came to appreciate the story, calling it a powerful and fitting way to end his character’s journey. Reflecting on his time with the show, he expressed gratitude for being part of such a long-running and successful series.

The episode honored Vance with a tribute montage featuring key characters from throughout NCIS, highlighting his lasting impact on the team and the show.

Binder acknowledged the difficulty of saying goodbye to such a central figure but emphasized that Vance’s sacrifice would continue to shape the team moving forward. The agents, while grieving, will carry on their mission in his honor.

Carroll’s departure marks the end of an era for NCIS, leaving fans to adjust to a major change in the series.
