Mark Harmon’s character, Leroy Jethro Gibbs, left the “NCIS” team months ago. His long list of rules, on the other hand, has become iconic both within the fictional headquarters and throughout the franchise. Furthermore, many of Gibbs’ rules make sense for our diverse team of investigators. Rule 9 is “never go anywhere without a knife,” and Rule 15 is “always works as a team.” Among his many rules, Gibbs has one that appears to be unusually specific: Rule 62.
The ‘NCIS’ Backstory to Gibbs’ Rule 62
As a long-time fan of “NCIS,” I don’t believe Rule 62 appears as frequently as some of Gibbs’ more iconic rules, such as Rule 9 and Rule 22. (Never, ever bother Gibbs in interrogation). It is, however, a relevant member of the “NCIS” patriarch’s rules to live by. “Always give people space when they get off an elevator,” it says.
Fans of “NCIS” have seen some of their favorite agents and coworkers collide in passing at the elevator doors over the course of nearly 20 seasons. Gibbs may have established Rule 62 after one too many times wearing his coffee.
Whatever the inspiration for Rule 62 was, Newsweek reports that it first appeared in 2014.
The season 11 episode “Double Back” follows Gibbs and the rest of the “NCIS” team as they work to find the t3rr0rist Benham Parsa after an att4ck on the Conrad Gala. Delilah, Special Agent McGee’s then-girlfriend and now-wife, is paralyzed as a result of the att4ck.
Abby meets the “NCIS” agent at the elevator as she rushes to report to Gibbs. “I know rule 62 is to always give people space when they get off the elevator,” she says, “but this is really important and I don’t want to waste any time.”
Rule 62 Appearance on ‘NCIS’ Season 19
Just because Gibbs is no longer in command of the “NCIS” team doesn’t mean the characters no longer follow his orders. In fact, the team’s newest member, Gary Cole’s Special Agent Alden Parker, has grown fond of some of the patriarch’s rules.
The most recent new episode of “NCIS,” titled “The Brat Pack” and focusing on McGee, aired last Monday. Essentially, the team’s investigation leads them to a group of troubled teenagers, where the senior field agent strikes up a friendship with one of them, who happens to be played by his real-life daughter, Cay Ryan Murray.
Parker’s favorite Gibbs rule is revealed there: Rule number 62.
“Do you mean Rule 62?” Parker tells Agent McGee. “He (Gibbs) was way ahead of his time.”
Despite the fact that Parker does not compare to the long-serving former special agent Gibbs, fans enjoy seeing the cast make references to their former boss and colleague, even if he does not make physical appearances in the show.
