NCIS

25 Years Later, This NCIS Star’s Overlooked 2000s Role Deserves Your Attention

Almost Famous is considered a classic, known for its strong ensemble cast. While Pauley Perrette’s brief role is often overlooked, she delivered a memorable two-minute performance early in her career.

Before appearing in Cameron Crowe’s 2000 film, Perrette had a handful of small movie credits and several TV roles, including Frasier, The Drew Carey Show, and Time of Your Life.

Alongside Perrette, Almost Famous features major stars such as Billy Crudup, Kate Hudson, Frances McDormand, Anna Paquin, Zooey Deschanel, Rainn Wilson, Jay Baruchel, Jimmy Fallon, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Over 25 years after its release, the film remains a beloved coming-of-age story about teen journalist William Miller (Patrick Fugit) and his journey with the rock band Stillwater.

Pauley Perrette’s Career Beyond Almost Famous
Perrette later became famous as Abby Sciuto on NCIS, playing the beloved goth forensic scientist from the show’s early 2000s rise to the long-running series’ 24th season (2024–2025). She left the show in 2017, later citing safety issues and conflicts on set, and retired from acting in 2020 to focus on activism.

Her Role in Almost Famous
In the film, Perrette plays Alice Wisdom, a radio DJ who debates music with Lester Bangs (Hoffman). Though brief, her scene stands out. Director Cameron Crowe named the character after his mother and partly based her on real DJ Gabriel Wisdom.

Why the Film Endures
Set in the early 1970s rock scene, Almost Famous blends humor, heart, and nostalgia. Many characters were inspired by real people, including Penny Lane and Crowe himself-who, like William, was a teenage journalist writing for Rolling Stone. The movie earned wide critical praise, won Crowe an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, and later became a cult classic despite underperforming at the box office.

Though Perrette’s part was small, her contribution remains a meaningful piece of the film’s legacy.
